AstBill Live CD - Where do we go from Here?

By london3 at Mon, 2005-11-07 02:42 | AstBill Live CD - General and Support

We are just wondering where to go with the Live CD project.

What is the Demands?

What do people use it for?

How can we improve it?

Is there a demand for a Fully configured Debian CD auto install in additional to the LIVE CD project.

Maybee people prefeer Fedora?

Live CD will run from a USB memory Stick. Is anybody interested?

Do we need a Developers Mailing List to discuss this?

Do we forget it and just develop AstBill software?

Whish list and collaboration proposal

By asterisk.italia on Tue, 2005-11-29 12:17

Hello, I'm a young asterisk user. I found astbill live cd being the choice for easy and fast asterisk server installation. My whish-list is the following:

.backup system as follow:
1) possibility to choose what to backup (system and user configs - mysql config)
2) possibility to choose when to backup
3) possibility to choose where to backup (flpppy, usb pen, hd, cf, ftp server)
4) possibility to boot automatically from cd whith config files found on floppy for example

the system I would like to work with is:

- no matter of what hardware I have (howhever supposing I have compatible hardware and minimum required) my live cd will boot correctly
- when booting the system search automatically through floppy or pens or hd or cf for pre-saved config files. If found it use them to boot
- if no config files found boot with standard config files
- once booted have the possibility to manage the db initially preconfigured. so I would like if I want, to clear easily the db or to backup at once all the db on a usb pen or floppy

- the system should have also the possibility to backup voicemail and all the data of user, for ex. on a dvd or on a external hd

- once I have set up the server with my preconfigured files found on a floppy or on a usb pen, the users would have the ability to connect to the web server running on the asterisk machine and download from a list the softphone they like more and eventually a preconfigured one with a tool to use contact list in outlook to call users with their softphone

- I would like to edit manually asterisk config files trough the web interface, without going on a shell

- possibility to chose a wizard to configure the server following a flow chart that let me to configure all what I need (example: initially from the wizard I'm asked to decide what is my final purpose, whether a soho, or a small calling system for less than 20 users, or for more than 50 users, or for a mixed system that use internal extensions for my soho and external extensions to call my partner small office in taiwan for example)

- include pre-configured setup for most used softphones or ip hardphones or ata converters

- possibility to have a pc in use only for the realtime engine of asterisk and configure this system to save all user data like voicemail on another pc on the net, like a nas or a ftp server or a normal file server, so if my asterisk box is fall down, I pull out the live cd, I pull out the usb pen with config files, I put in another identical backup pc the live cd and the pen, and in 4 minutes I have my asterisk server fully functional with user data still on.

- If i need to install an addictional package to the system, I would have the possibility to make a new live cd with the new package already installed. This could be done with a script

So, I think there are some ideas! I am available for beta-testing and for translations into italian language. Please let me know.

Your Wish List has allready

By anil on Thu, 2005-12-01 01:01

Your Wish List has allready been answered.

Most of your wishes can be covered in one go by following up on the backup to disk/key settings in the menu control panel. you have to tell the backup program what to backup.

By doing this you will have access to all the data & configuration files.

more info is available at the dsl howto's section.

You do not need to have a config editor, as all files are realtime. But if you still need it, then install a php file editor, similar to the one you find in asterisk@home configedit.

For using a remote mysql server with your Live CD, use the backup/restore program to restore your own copy of the astbill.conf file. this file tells astbill to connect to which mysql server.

The final one regarding upgrading or updating with your programs can also be addressed by installing in the frugal mode to a HDD. Then update the o/s or applications.

Then copy/burn the KNOPPIX file back onto the live cd again.

Just by using the backup/restore program, all of your wishes have been anwered. (i use the live cd for my actual website :) )

A Few Ideas

By Bryan on Tue, 2005-11-08 04:13

Well I think an auto-install option from the livecd would be great, that way people could look at it , play with it, and decide if they want it, then if they do, take the cd to a machine they want to run it on and install.

Second, perhaps a scaled back setup on it that has a couple of accounts that have no billing in them that one could use to setup a sophisticated home/soho aswering system with IVR and/or inter office soft client communications.

Third, a USB/floppy config save. This way one could setup the server then save the configs and if it had to reboot it would only loose the messages not the config. This is also VERY helpfull if testing the livecd and you want to make changes and then come back to testing later.

I'm sure I can think of alot more reasons to have the live cd but will start here.

Oh write to CF card and run on embeded system like WRAP board or sc1100 type board would be nice. too many things to list that one but would be nice.
